Our leadership team.

“It was my first time fixing a tyre – and I will never forget the memory with Steve, Jana, Chloé and Marie.”

Allegra, 15

Here’s just a few of us…

  • Jana Arnhold and Nic Kershaw

Nic (from the UK) & Jana (from Germany) help lead Kids in the Wild. They have spent the past ten years living in East and Southern Africa, managing safari lodges. Their extensive experience welcoming, guiding and taking great care of families from all over the world, together with their passion to share experiences in the wilderness, has led them to create In The Wild Safaris.

Jana is a specialist photographic guide with a keen interest in authentic cultural experiences and family safaris. She has a keen eye for detail and a great love of photography. Nic is at his most animated when working with new people on their next adventure. His good humour and infectious passion are enhanced by an encyclopaedic knowledge when it comes to planning an expedition and guiding you through the bush.

Combining a love of nature with deep understanding, an artistic flair, and a lot of fun, they aim for unforgettable experiences for those in their care.

  • Angus O'Shea

Angus (from Australia) helps lead Kids in the Wild. He is a proud parent of two LFNY students, and has spent much of the last two decades working around Africa: first building a medical university in western Tanzania while running a McKinsey non-profit, then as advisor to various East African governments in Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Ethiopia. He also spent over a year in Sierra Leone during the Ebola crisis.

An avid wildlife photographer, Angus met Nic and Jana in 2012 when he visited camps they were managing in the Saadani and Selous national parks in Tanzania. He also worked with Alex Walker’s team in Serian while in Kenya, and again with Kids in the Wild 2021.

Angus shares with them all a passion for expanding knowledge, confidence and resilience of people across the world, starting with his own kids. So he, Jana and Nic jointly decided to try to create a unique opportunity for the LFNY community.

  • Roisin Allen & Adrian Allen

Roisin and her husband Adrian are the duo managing Serian, Ngare Serian and Nkorombo camps. They have built their home in the heart of the Mara North Conservancy. Roisin’s background is steeped in the wilderness, and she comes from solid safari stock: her grandfather Japper Evans was a camel guru, organising treks across the Sahara.

But the best bush connection for Roisin was through her uncle, who used to own Sabuk: it was here she met Adrian, and took on the happy role of being his better half. True to her offbeat upbringing, her childhood pets included many wild beasts of furred and feathered varieties, so it was no surprise when Roisin adopted Impi the baby impala into the Serian fold.

Adrian Allen was born and brought up in Kenya, and passed his younger years roaming, exploring and fishing, nurturing a love for the wild outdoors and pristine places. He trained as a guide in South Africa, and came back home to guide camel safaris. Tracking Elephant and Buffalo on foot in Northern Kenya became second nature to Adrian. He rapidly added camp management to his skill-set, now with twenty years guiding experience, Adrian is a part owner of Alex Walker’s Serian and takes care of running our operations in Kenya.

  • James Kipetu

James is a head guide at Serian, and one of the most dynamic Mara guides. He joined the Serian family in 2011, and in 2013, he was Serian’s first to become a silver level guide. This is such a fantastic achievement, and now he is preparing himself to achieve the highest level of guiding qualifications here in Kenya, the gold.

To achieve such a qualification, one must choose a subject as a thesis. James’ thesis is on the relationship between Tawny eagles and Bateleur eagles.

James brings to his work a combination of keen expertise, long family history in the Mara, and an eagerness to share that sets him apart from many guides and trainers in Kenya.

James believes that the single most important thing – besides giving our clients a trip of a lifetime – is educating the community and the children of the future on conservation, the utilization of what we have and the carrying capacity of the land for both wildlife and livestock.

  • Steve Liaram

Steve Liaram is a head guide at Serian. Serian’s guides are really on a roll now… first James passed his silver guiding examination to become Serian’s first silver guide and now the wonderful and charismatic Steve has passed his silver guiding examination to become Serian’s second silver guide!

Steve joined the Serian team in 2011 and has been a major hit with all of the guests he has guided. His knowledge and gentle character make Steve one of a kind - and one of the most sought-after guides during Kids in the Wild 2021!

Steve works tirelessly to give the Kids in the Wild the best possible experience and the most advice possible in the time we have together.

  • Estelle Christie

Estelle helps lead the KITW team. She is now in year 12 at the Lycée Français de New York, is bilingual in French and English, conversant in Spanish, and working on her Kiswahili!

Estelle also attended Kids in the Wild each year from 2021-24, and is a veteran of Outward Bound - most recently working on sea turtle conservation in Panama, mountaineering in the Cascades and dogsledding in mid winter in Minnesota. She is passionate about the environment, conservation, and people working together for a common cause, and is laser-focused on becoming a veterinary surgeon.

Estelle is an avid sportsperson, playing soccer for the Manhattan Soccer Club, volleyball for the LFNY, and has previously played tennis for the John McEnroe Tennis Academy in New York. She has achieved Grade 7 in piano with the Royal Conservatory of Music, and achieved her Galop 4 certificate – le brevet de cavalier – in horse riding with the Fédération Française d'Equitation.

And there’s more – Mark, John, Michael and the whole team in the Mara…
